Critical analysis of evidence.
You are required to analyse the evidence used in the assessment of a patient.
This means examining clinical decisions and application of an evidence-based approach. The intention is for you to show that you can interpret and understand clinical evidence and its implications for your practice.
Critical analysis has a 2,500-word limit (100%) which will include a reflective component (approximately 500 words) aimed at evaluating your learning.
This is an electronic submission (Turnitin) via the university electronic Learning Portal. Feedback will be electronic and individualised to identify good practice and suggest areas for development
There will be two Turnitin submission points (See diagram below).

These can be found in the “Assessment and Submission (See in the diagram above). One submission point is for publish work only (blue outline in diagram) and can be used throughout the module. The other submission point is for your final submission (Red outline in diagram). Do not use the final submission point for publish work as you will not be able to submit the correct version afterwards. Allow 24-72 hours for originality reports and build this into your submission time planning.
What can I use as a topic for my assignment?
Choose a patient you have assessed in practice during the module. You should identify a topic that is new or unusual that got your attention about the patient’s condition. Look to extend your knowledge. If you choose something familiar, then it must demonstrate development of new knowledge and understanding.
From your chosen patient assessment, focus in on an assessment/diagnostic reasoning element as your topic. This may be something familiar that you do not have a clear understanding of the evidence or something new. For example, if you assess a patient for abdominal pain you may like to look at the evidence regarding clinical examination to identify appendicitis such as the Psoas Sign, Obturator sign and McBurney’s sign. Alternatively, for example, you could have a patient who y​‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌​ou suspect has thyroid disease and focus in on the clinical evidence regarding thyroid function tests and treatment.
What evidence can I use
You will need to search the literature for studies that demonstrate evidence related to your focus. It may be that there is lots of good evidence or limited evidence and what evidence there may vary from well-designed RCT research, to observational studies, or case reviews to best practice statements. We expect you to show that you understand concepts such as sensitivity, specificity, likelihood, positive and negative predictive values when you discuss the evidence.
How your assignment should be structured
Identify your patient and explain the clinical context-put your full assessment of the patient in an appendix
Explain the reason for choice
Review the evidence- a critical review, not a description of the studies.
Evaluate your findings and relate them to your practice
Reflect on your learning (approximately 500 words). This relates to the assignment and application to practice and role.
Use appendices as appropriate, not as an assignment filler, quality over quantity every time.
Although this is an academic assignment, when referring to yourself or your practice, it is acceptable to use the first person “I, me, my” etc. Do not use pretend third person terms like “the author” when referring to yourself; it is not good practice.
Do not use any information that will identify patients and your place of work (see confidentiality and anonymity below)
Word Limit (2000 words and 500 words reflection)
Word limits are important in maintaining parity and you should NOT exceed the word limit that is clearly stated for your route of study. Students who exceed the word limit will be penalised accordingly.
